Weekend Lunch Service
Since the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen will be open seven days a week, there will no longer be lunches served out of the van as of now..
Food Pickup
We occasionally need volunteers to pick up food at the Eastern Illinois Food Bank (daytime), various stores, restaurants, and dorms on campus (evenings). The food is brought to the soup kitchen where it is sorted, dated and put away. Volunteers can use their own transportation or the DBSK van. Food pickups occur almost daily, including weekends. If interested, please email dbskvolunteering@gmail.com.
Referral/Assistance Program (RAP) Office Volunteers
Volunteers staff the referral desk one day per week from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Respond to guest inquiries and distribute referral information cards.

Volunteer Policies
-
Everyone who eats at Daily Bread should be treated as a valued guest, with respect, with courtesy, and with kindness. Guests should be addressed politely as “Sir” or “Miss” or “Ma'am” or by their given names.
-
It is a Daily Bread policy that volunteers DO NOT give money, medication, or rides to guests. If asked, volunteers should politely respond that we canʼt give out cash or rides. All requests for assistance should be referred to the assistance program on the second Wednesday of the month.
-
Volunteers should never deal with an angry or confrontational guest alone. Always bring in another volunteer, usually the crew chief. If a guest makes a volunteer feel uncomfortable in any way, he/she should quietly leave the situation and report it to the crew chief.
-
All volunteers should check with the crew chief before giving out any additional food or other extras. Usually seconds are available around 12:15 p.m.
-
Volunteers should identify themselves by their first names only. No volunteer should feel pressured to provide any personal information to guests, such as full name, address, phone number, etc.
-
Many guests with mental health issues have problems with being touched. Other guests may misread physical contact. In general, volunteers should avoid physical contact with guests.
-
Do not bring valuables (purse, phone, wallet, etc.), which canʼt be kept on your person, into the Soup Kitchen area.
-
All volunteers should dress in clean, sturdy, non sexually suggestive attire (i.e., no short shorts, too tight or low cut tops.)
-
Smile and have a good time!
